The History Of The Revelation Gospel Singers

On October 1, 1971, God spoke to Miss Joyce Barfield (now Mrs. Joyce Best), Mr. Thaddeus “Tic” Lewis, Mr. Doug Kornegay and Mr. Leroy Lewis and placed in their hearts and souls the determination to sing the songs of Zion for Him.  Then in turn, they spoke to others later on.  They put things together during a meeting at Central Heights Free Will Baptist Church and decided to start a gospel group at the meeting. There was a debate on a name for the group and after having debated for a while, the decision was made to call the group, “The Revelation Gospel Singers (RGS)”.  The meaning of their group name was taken from the words Revelation meaning “The act of making known” and Gospel meaning “Good News”. The group stepped out on faith and started spreading the Good News through songs.  The group had as their advisors: Deacon Leslie “Cute” Kornegay and Mother Maggie Kornegay.

At that time, Miss Joyce Barfield consented to be the musician and Mr. Thaddeus Lewis, the drummer.  Later on in that year, the group was blessed to receive another musician, Mr. Jimmy Yelverton and a guitarist, Mr. Eddie Jones.

The Revelation Gospel Singers were discovered by Mr. Robert “Bob” Swinson of Radio Station WOKN of Goldsboro in 1974.  He heard them singing and liked the sound and performance of this young, anointed group called, The Revelation Gospel Singers.  He would later invited them to sing at one of the local concerts.

The Revelation Gospel Singers recorded their 1st Album titled “Revelation’s Plea” on Hoyt Sullivan Enterprise (H.S.E.) Records in Nashville, Tennessee in 1975.  Other famous Gospel Artist or Groups to record on the H.S.E. Record label during that time were:  The Gerard Sisters, Willie Banks & The Messengers, J.J. Farley and The Original Soul Stirrers, Howard (Slim) Hunt & The Supreme Angels, The Fabulous Luckett Brothers and The Mississippi Nightingales.

The 2nd Album titled “Lord, You’ve Been So Good To Me” and the 3rd Album titled “Saints Hold On” were recorded at Galaxie III Studios in Taylorsville, North Carolina.

As the years passed by, some of the members moved on. However, God would send other members from various communities, towns and cities to continue the spreading of the gospel through songs. For over 45 years, the group had many followers as they toured throughout the eastern part of the United States singing and ministering through songs. During this time, the group performed in concert or on program with many famous recording artist and received numerous awards and recognition.

In 2018, The Revelation Gospel Singers officially retired after 47 years of singing. Pastor Burnett and the Central Heights FWB Church family would like to thank all of The Revelation Gospel Singers for their dedication and devotion through the years. Thank You for sharing and using your talent to the Glory of God!
